Fliis: 1930 HITS ARCHIVE: The Lonesome Road - Ted Lewis (Ted Lewis & the Dixie Four, vocal)

“Look down, look down that lonesome road” was composed in 1927 by Victor’s music director Nat Shilkret and the label’s star vocalist Gene Austin. Note this label’s “Show Boat” credit, which refers to the 1929 part-talkie motion picture in which the tune was heard during the film’s finale in place of “Ol’ Man River.” The Dixie Four was an African-American Quartet consisting of Charles Emmett, William Emmett, Herbert Benson, and Junior Dean.
